Jon
Jon Voss has implemented social justice strategies across sectors as diverse as finance, music, technology and culture. His early work as a strategic consultant included the development of socially and environmentally responsible business practices for music festivals including the Tibetan Freedom Concerts and artists like the Beastie Boys, David Crosby and Wyclef Jean. He spent five years focused on impact investing before moving into technology, helping religious communities and other institutions develop technology infrastructure and strategies that fit with their beliefs, culture and daily practice. He served as the IT Director for the San Francisco Zen Center before running his own IT consulting firm for 7 years.
Jon has spent the last ten years helping cultural organizations create policy and programs to share data, increase access and traffic to collections, and develop tools and programs to deeply engage with diverse audiences. He helped build the Historypin network to over 4,000 cultural memory organizations, co-founded the Linked Open Data in Libraries, Archives and Museums Summit in 2011, and co-founded the Cultural Heritage and Social Change Summit in 2016.
Today, Jon is a senior strategist and co-founder of Shift Collective, a non-profit consulting and design group that helps organizations better engage, collaborate with, and reflect their local communities. He also serves on the board of Mid City Zen.
Over the years, Jon has spoken at conferences like SXSW Interactive, Where2.0, American Library Association, Society of American Archivists, Data2.0, SemTech; and he's led workshops at the Smithsonian, New York Public Library and the Internet Archive, to name a few.
